Choosing the right books in MBBS can save you hundreds of study hours. Many students buy too many books in first year and later realize they only needed a few solid resources.
This guide lists the most commonly used and recommended MBBS books in Nepal for every subject and year.
Whether you study under TU, KU, BPKIHS, PAHS, or another university, these books are widely followed by medical students and seniors. Let’s dive into the content without much wandering.
First Year MBBS Books
Anatomy
Recommended Books
Gray’s Anatomy for Students
Best for understanding concepts and diagrams. There is a student version available.BD Chaurasia Human Anatomy
Most popular exam-oriented anatomy book in South Asia but Preferably in India. In Nepal, it is as much useful as it can be.Cunningham’s Manual of Practical Anatomy
Useful during dissection and practical sessions. You’ll need this for the sole reference.
Which one should you use?
Most Nepal MBBS students use BD Chaurasia for exams and Gray’s for conceptual understanding. If you have to buy one book, buy BD Chaurasia as it will be concise for you instead of Grey’s.
Physiology
Recommended Books
Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology
Gold standard physiology book. There is no other words for this book. Buy this book, even if you won’t use it. The writings are thriller type, with an interesting par.AK Jain Physiology
Easier for exams and revision.Sembulingam Physiology
Beginner-friendly and concise.
Recommendation
Use Guyton for concepts and AK Jain/Sembulingam for university preparation. If these books feel too diverse for you, there are guide books to opt for. Maybe, Fasttrack huh? 😉
Biochemistry
Recommended Books
Harper’s Illustrated Biochemistry
Excellent conceptual book.Satyanarayana Biochemistry
Popular among MBBS students for exams. This is a diverse but concise at the same time sort of book.Vasudevan Biochemistry
Good balance between detail and readability.
Recommendation
Most students prefer Satyanarayana for exam preparation. Maybe this book will be your best BioChem companion!
Second Year MBBS Books
Pathology
Recommended Books
Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease
Gold standard pathology book. Buy and Keep this book. This book will never be out of use, trust me!Harsh Mohan Pathology
Easier and more exam-oriented.
Recommendation
Robbins is excellent for concepts, while Harsh Mohan is easier for quick revision.
Pharmacology
Recommended Books
KDT Pharmacology
Most commonly used pharmacology textbook in Nepal and India.Shanbhag Pharmacology
Good for quick revision before exams.
Recommendation
KDT is enough for most university exams if studied properly.
Microbiology
Recommended Books
Apurba Sastry Microbiology
Highly popular among MBBS students.Ananthanarayan and Paniker’s Microbiology
Detailed and standard reference.
Recommendation
Apurba Sastry is usually easier for exam preparation.
Forensic Medicine
Recommended Books
Parikh’s Textbook of Medical Jurisprudence and Toxicology
Reddy Forensic Medicine
Recommendation
Reddy is commonly preferred for university exams. But, the IPC section won’t be of use, as it is for Indians. Get the local FMT guidebook for Nepal’s law-related topics to cover.
Third Year MBBS Books
Community Medicine
Recommended Books
Park’s Textbook of Preventive and Social Medicine
Standard PSM book. Epidemiology and Biostatistics will be of great use from this book.Review of PSM by Vivek Jain
Great for revision and MCQs.
ENT
Recommended Books
Dhingra ENT
Recommendation
Most MBBS students use Dhingra almost exclusively. You won’t need to buy a guidebook for this subject, as the book itself is portioned into Definition, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment type of sections, making it easier for the sole reading material.
Ophthalmology
Recommended Books
Khurana Ophthalmology
Recommendation
Very exam-friendly and concise. This applies same as Dhingra’s ENT.
Final Year MBBS Books
Medicine
Recommended Books
Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine
Best balance between concepts and readability.Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine
Advanced reference textbook.MacLeod’s Clinical Examination
Essential for clinical examination and OSCEs.
Recommendation
Most students rely mainly on Davidson during MBBS. Buy Davidson and read it line by line. Make it your main source. You can’t trust Guidebooks for concept retaining incase of Medicine. There is no room for shortcut in Medicine, trust me.
Surgery
Recommended Books
Bailey and Love’s Short Practice of Surgery
Das Clinical Surgery
Recommendation
Bailey & Love is the standard surgery book for MBBS. While, Das focuses on clinical portion.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Recommended Books
DC Dutta’s Textbook of Obstetrics
DC Dutta’s Textbook of Gynecology
Shaw’s Textbook of Gynecology
Pediatrics
Recommended Books
Ghai Essential Pediatrics
Recommendation
Ghai is more than enough for most undergraduate exams.
Final Advice for MBBS Students in Nepal
Do not try to read every book completely. MBBS is more about consistency than collecting resources.
A good strategy is:
One main textbook
One review/revision book (a guidebook)
Notes + past questions
Regular revision
Too many resources usually create confusion.
Suggested “Must-Have” Minimal Book List
If you want only one core book per subject:
| Subject | Recommended Book |
|---|---|
| Anatomy | BD Chaurasia (its simple, guide-like & reference book at the same time) |
| Physiology | Guyton (its text rich and learning the mechanism feels like a movie ride) |
| Biochemistry | Satyanarayana (the contents are concise and simple English) |
| Pathology | Robbins (this is a bible of pathology, text rich and extensive) |
| Pharmacology | KDT (retaining knowledge and using as reference serves best) |
| Microbiology | Apurba Sastry (concise and content rich references) |
| Community Medicine | Park (keep it as a souvenir, learning epidemiology &biostatistics will come in handy) |
| Medicine | Davidson (the GOAT of medicine. a fine version for reference and guide) |
| Surgery | Bailey & Love (text enriched, big English but comes in handy) |
| Pediatrics | Ghai (sectioned topic wise, text enriched and reference king) |
Now, if you ask me what I used during my MBBS years; here are the books I used actually to study (I brought all the standard textbooks though)
2. Physiology – Guyton for understanding, and GuideBook for revision & content collection
4. Pathology – Robbins for understanding
5. MicroBiology – Lange for Immunology (its GOAT), GuideBook for Micro Portion
6. Pharmacology – KD Tripathi for MoA, Professor’s notes for Uses, side effects and other memorable stuffs.
7. FMT – completely Professor’s Note.
8. PSM – completely Professor’s note & Epidemiology from Park’s.
9. Medicine – completely Davidson! Just highlight the parts, and you’re done, or annotate the GuideBook.
10. Surgery – completely Bailey & Love! But this textbook isn’t revision-friendly, for which GuideBook & annotation was used.
11. ENT – Dhingra for all.
12. Eye- Khurana’s Book, for all.
14. Gynae & Obs – DC Dutta’s Books are decent read, revision-unfriendly.
want to buy any of these books? You don’t have to buy a new one, just buy a used one (equally effective) on our Thrift Books section and save couple of Rupees.
almost all of the books mentioned here are available as PDF free of cost (editions may vary), all over the internet. We can’t share pirated contents here, but you shouldn’t search on google with the book name and .pdf to get the downloadable file. Happy learning!
